A Collaborative Partnership – From Training Through Claims Management
Miller Lumber Company is a full-service building materials retailer that has been serving Central Oregon’s builders and homeowners for over a century. Family owned and operated since its inception in 1911, Miller Lumber now has four locations in Bend (the flagship store), Redmond, Prineville and Madras. The company is a leader in the sales of green-certified lumber, and was recognized as the Bend Chamber of Commerce’s Business of the Year in 2006.
Miller Lumber has been an OBI member for decades, and has taken advantage of the SAIF OBI CompSAFE workers’ compensation insurance program for many years. “SAIF does a good job, both in terms of providing training to help prevent accidents and managing claims,” said Charley Miller, the company’s president. “The training our staff has undergone in the last decade has resulted in reduced premiums and increased dividends. Our relationship with SAIF – which started in 1916 – has been very collaborative.”
The reduced premiums Miller Lumber enjoys through the SAIF OBI CompSAFE program are a great benefit, but it’s not the reason the Miller family maintains an OBI membership. “I feel that it’s important as a business owner to support efforts to enhance the overall business climate – groups like OBI, as well chambers of commerce, lumber associations and builders’ associations,” Miller opined. “We appreciate OBI’s legislative advocacy. We’re a bit removed from what’s going on in Salem. OBI educates us on what’s coming down the line from the legislature so we can follow up and get more information if necessary.”
